GOMOS: Ozone profile measurements by stellar occultations
نویسنده
چکیده
The Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars instrument (GOMOS) will be launched on board ESA’s Envisat satellite in late 2001. GOMOS will measure ozone and trace gases in the atmosphere by detecting the absorption of star light in UV, visible and infrared wavelengths. GOMOS will deliver ozone and other trace gas profiles at altitudes 15-90 km with a good vertical resolution and with a global coverage. As a self-calibrating method stellar occultation measurements provide a basis for long-term monitoring of ozone profiles.

Influence of Scintillation on Quality of Ozone Monitoring by Gomos
Point-like nature of stars leads to significant disturbances of light beams passed through the atmosphere by refractive effects. These effects should be taken into account in retrievals from stellar occultation measurements. We consider the influence of scintillation on stellar occultation measurements and on quality of ozone retrievals from these measurements, based on experience of the GOMOS ...
متن کاملCombined SAGE II–GOMOS ozone profile data set for 1984–2011 and trend analysis of the vertical distribution of ozone
We have studied data from two satellite occultation instruments in order to generate a high vertical resolution homogeneous ozone time series of 26 yr. The Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) II solar occultation instrument and the Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars (GOMOS) instrument measured ozone profiles in the stratosphere and mesosphere from 1984–2005 and 2002–201...
متن کاملFinnish Meteorological Institute Contributions No. 49 Inverse Problems in Stellar Occultation
Remote sensing plays a key role in monitoring the atmosphere, which becomes increasingly important for the Earth’s changing environment. The stellar occultation technique is a novel method to monitor vertical distribution of ozone and other trace gases from the troposphere to the upper mesosphere. GOMOS (Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars) flying on board the European Space Agency’...
متن کاملGOMOS ozone profile validation using ground-based and balloon sonde measurements
The validation of ozone profiles retrieved by satellite instruments through comparison with data from groundbased instruments is important to monitor the evolution of the satellite instrument, to assist algorithm development and to allow multi-mission trend analyses. In this study we compare ozone profiles derived from GOMOS night-time observations with measurements from lidar, microwave radiom...
متن کاملValidation of Gomos Products Using Salomon Algorithms and Data
The UV-visible spectrometer SALOMON, dedicated to the retrieval of vertical profiles of O3, NO2 and NO3, has performed measurements on 19 September 2002, from Aire sur l’Adour (France) between 20h00 and 22h30 TU. At the same time, an ozone sounding has been launched. GOMOS has performed measurements at 21h24 UT, with a spatial coincidence with SALOMON and the sounding of around 250 km. Then, al...
